WINTER DISPLAY AND TRAIN EXHIBIT
Ongoing through January 8, 2012: see times below I BROOKSIDE GARDENS, WHEATON
The Winter display inside the conservatories coincides with ‘Garden of Lights’ outside and includes a garden railway landscaped with a variety of evergreens and conifers as well as colorful flowering plants of the season. This year’s plantings will include a few edible plants like chard and hot peppers which offer colorful leaves and fruits. Flowering plants from warmer regions of the world including red-flowered Cestrum, Bouganvillea, blue and white Browallia (bell flower), and several flowering Salvias (sages). These and familiar Poinsettia s are accented by the chartreuse and soft lime foliage of Monterrey Cypress and ‘Limelight’ licorice plant (Helichrysum petiolare). The Train Exhibit opens with the Garden of Lights on Friday, November 25 at 5:30pm and runs through January 8, 2012. The North House will remain open only in the evenings during display change from November 28-December 2. Both houses will be open during the day at no cost from December 3-January 8 from 10:00am-5:00pm.
THE GARDEN OF LIGHTS

During the evenings, Brookside Gardens is transformed into a spectacular winter wonderland with one million twinkling colorful lights shaped into original art-forms like a giant Loch Ness Monster, a kaleidoscope caterpillar, a flock of flying geese, animals, flowers, plants and more! Now in its 15th season, the Garden of Lights walk-though holiday light display is a family favorite for young and old. Enjoy light refreshments, musical performances, and shopping located in our Visitors Center during the show. The Conservatory and Train Exhibit will open with the Garden of Lights on Friday, November 25 at 5:30pm and runs through January 8 every evening with admission to the light show. ADMISSION: Cash Only. $20 per car/van (M-Th) 5:30 -9:00pm; $25 per car/van (F-Su) 5:30-10:00pm; (last car admitted 30 minutes before closing time). DIVIDED VOICES, MARYLAND IN THE CIVIL WAR

The impact of the war on the people of Maryland will be told in personal terms in “Divided Voices: Maryland in the Civil War.” The largest Civil War exhibit in the museum’s 167-year history will occupy over 5,000 square feet and tell the story of a tragedy in three acts: the romantic war, the real war and the long reunion.

IMAX FILM FESTIVAL

The Maryland Science Center’s popular IMAX Film Festival returns for a limited engagement this winter beginning January 3rd. Maryland’s only true IMAX Theater showcases the best of the large format genre featuring theatrical performances, stories of survival, and films that take a look at the nature and animals which surround us. Film titles rotate on a frequent basis and during the run of the Film Festival and there is no need to purchase a Science Center exhibit admission ticket to see IMAX films. All films are available at single entry admission prices throughout the day.

The riots were followed by the occupation of Maryland by Federal Troops, arrests of southern sympathizers, and some significant military events which impacted Maryland dramatically at the time and events that still impact us.

Now it's up to Jake, the young sawfish, and his paranoid pal, Shorty, to restore the magic of Kaluoka'hina. Their only lead: the ancient legend that tells of touching the moon. Audrey Frank, clinical social worker, will moderate a panel of six KODA Teens who will share their insights, perceptions, and experiences related to their identity. This workshop is a follow up from last year's session on this topic, and is geared towards parents, mental health professionals and school professions who wish to explore identity development, technology, educational, and cultural/linguistic needs of hearing children of deaf parents. Library resources will be on display. This program is coordinated by Maryland Kids of Deaf Adults in conjunction with the Germantown Library. This event is free. Register online.
